My Top Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photo Shoot

Let’s be honest—family photo shoots can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. Coordinating outfits, getting everyone together, and keeping the little ones happy can be a lot to think about. But it doesn’t have to be stressful! With a little preparation and the right approach, your family session can be relaxed, fun, and full of real moments you’ll want to keep forever.

Wear What Feels Comfortable

Choose clothes that feel comfortable and true to your family’s style. You don’t need to match perfectly—coordinating colours and textures work far better. Think about outfits that complement each other without being too "matchy-matchy." Neutral tones, soft fabrics, and layering are always great options. Try to avoid large logos, or anything too busy, as they can distract from the overall look. The key is for everyone to feel comfortable and confident, especially the little ones.

Timing Matters

We need to think about the time of day that works best for your family and the available light, especially as it changes with the seasons. During the summer, we might be working with bright sunlight for most of the day, whereas in winter, the light fades much earlier. So, it’s important to plan our session at a time when the lighting is soft and flattering. It’s also key to choose a time that works for your family’s routine. If the kids are usually more energised in the morning, let’s shoot then. Timing the shoot around nap schedules or when everyone’s in good spirits will help ensure happy, natural photos.

Bring Snacks and Plan for Breaks

Kids can be unpredictable, and sometimes the excitement of a photo shoot can feel like a lot for them. Bringing along a few non-messy snacks can help keep everyone’s energy up. Think crackers, fruit slices, or something they can nibble on quickly during breaks. If anyone needs a little time out or space to reset, that’s absolutely fine. We can pause as needed and keep things relaxed so that everyone feels comfortable.

Don’t Worry About Posing

While I’ll guide you with some ideas and suggestions, the best family photos usually come from the unplanned moments. The laughter, the cuddles, the way your children naturally hold your hand—these are the moments that really tell your family’s story. So, don’t worry too much about getting the "perfect" pose. If your children feel like running around, that’s okay! We’ll capture the spontaneous, joyful moments that often turn out to be the best ones.

Keep It Fun!

At the end of the day, family shoots are about capturing your family’s unique energy. The more relaxed and natural you feel, the better the photos will be. Whether it’s bringing along a favourite toy, having a little play, or just being yourselves, those details help make the shoot feel personal and genuine. And remember—things don’t need to be perfect. It’s perfectly normal for kids to get a bit restless or shy. The goal is to create an atmosphere where everyone feels at ease, so we can capture those authentic moments that really show your family as you are.
